Our Roots in Old Saybrook
B & L Construction is proudly based in Old Saybrook, Connecticut, where the Connecticut River meets Long Island Sound and historic New England buildings line the streets. Since 1993, we’ve focused on lasting quality that fits the character and demands of the shoreline communities we serve.
From Small Jobs to Large Sites
Founded by Allen Hull, B & L grew from a local sand, gravel, and landscape operation into a full-service sitework and excavating contractor. Today, we handle projects ranging from residential driveways to multi‑million‑dollar commercial and municipal developments across southeastern Connecticut.
We self-perform all phases of site work, including land clearing and grubbing, earthwork and grading, utilities and drainage, roadways and paving, and select landscaping and finishes. As a bondable contractor, we are equipped to support complex, schedule-driven projects with accountability from start to finish.
HOW WE WORK
Our promise is simple: deliver a quality job, completed on time, at a fair price. We typically complete close to 100 projects each year, from $500 service jobs to $4 million site packages, and we’re known for adapting our crews and equipment to keep pace with changing schedules and field conditions.
Because site work is often impacted by many trades, we plan ahead, stay flexible, and use our sizeable fleet to keep projects moving. This responsiveness is a key reason so much of our work comes from repeat clients.
B & L was built on the belief that no company succeeds without good people in the field and office. Owner Allen Hull works directly with clients, then coordinates with seasoned foremen, superintendents, and our office manager, Denise Sypher, to keep communication clear and decisions fast.
In the field, experienced crew members like Frank Soares, Pete Taylor, Bob Moon, Scott Hoyt, John Serbaschewicz, Rod Brown, Jim Mack, Peter Rodgers, and Bruce Sypher bring decades of hands‑on knowledge to every jobsite. Their workmanship, reliability, and attention to safety are at the core of our reputation
THE TEAM BEHIND THE WORK
Equipment, Reliability, and Partnerships
We operate a well-maintained fleet of Komatsu excavators, dozers, and wheel loaders, giving us nearly a one‑to‑one ratio of machines to field staff. With 24 units, including 14 excavators from compact models up to a PC300LC‑7, we can match the right equipment to each task and phase of work.
Attachments such as grapples, hydraulic hammers, and quick couplers allow our crews to switch tools quickly and control costs on active sites. Long-term relationships with our equipment dealer, East PBE, and their strong parts and rental support help us minimize downtime and keep schedules on track.
Commitment to Safety and Maintenance
Safety is a daily priority at B & L. Weekly toolbox talks, annual safety trainings with guest speakers, and a focus on trench safety and working around heavy equipment keep our crews prepared and alert.
We treat equipment appearance and performance as an extension of our image. Every machine is tracked from purchase to sale, brought in each winter for a comprehensive overhaul, and repainted on a regular cycle to ensure reliability and professionalism on every job.
